Accelerating Digital Innovation Through a 3-Day Government Hackathon

As part of supporting innovation and accelerating the digital transformation journey in the government sector, we designed and delivered an innovation hackathon for a government entity in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The goal was to develop innovative digital solutions that address institutional challenges and enhance beneficiary experience.

The hackathon combined design thinking methodologies, emerging technologies, and collaborative teamwork to transform ideas into practical prototypes within a short timeframe.

The Challenge

The government entity aimed to achieve several strategic objectives, including:

  • Strengthening the culture of innovation within the organization

  • Engaging employees and experts in developing innovative digital solutions

  • Leveraging emerging technologies to enhance government services

  • Generating ideas that can evolve into future digital projects

To achieve these goals, an intensive 3-day innovation hackathon program was designed.

Implementation Methodology

The preparation phase began one month prior to the event, during which the company’s team worked on designing a comprehensive innovation experience that included:

  • Identifying innovation challenge areas related to improving beneficiary experience

  • Defining objectives for each challenge to support institutional excellence

  • Designing the hackathon program and accompanying training activities

  • Identifying emerging technologies that could support the development of innovative solutions

The target participants were also identified, and participating teams were organized to ensure the best possible outcomes.

The hackathon brought together employees from the government entity alongside specialists in technology and innovation.

The Hackathon Journey

Day 1 – Innovation Awareness

The event began with introductory sessions and workshops covering:

  • Design Thinking methodology in innovation

  • Overview of the latest emerging technologies

  • Analysis of the proposed challenges

Day 2 – Idea Development

Participants formed teams and worked on:

  • Generating innovative ideas

  • Developing use cases

  • Designing proposed solutions

Day 3 – Prototyping and Final Presentations

Teams focused on:

  • Developing solution prototypes

  • Preparing presentations

  • Presenting their solutions to the judging panel

Results

The hackathon delivered several tangible outcomes, including:

  • 12 innovative ideas ready for further development

  • 3 winning teams selected based on innovation and feasibility criteria

  • Evaluation of the potential to transform some solutions into future digital projects
